Road trip trivia is a question game you play in the car. Players take turns answering questions about US states, landmarks, roadside attractions, and famous road trip stops. Play our free game right here with 222 multiple-choice questions, a scoreboard for the whole car, and a fun fact after every answer.

I’ll be honest. I can’t stand trivia games that ask stuff nobody knows, like who was the best football player in 1976. So I built this one differently.

  • Questions you can actually answer. State capitals, nicknames, and famous places, the stuff you learned in school or saw on a sign
  • Every question is multiple choice. Even if you don’t know it, you can make a good guess
  • Cool facts you’ll want to look up. How many Cadillacs are buried at Cadillac Ranch? Where can you eat lunch while watching bears out the window?

Half the fun is the fun fact after each answer. You’ll hear a lot of “wait, really?” and somebody will be googling before the next question.

How Do You Play Road Trip Trivia?

You play road trip trivia by taking turns answering questions, with one point for every right answer. Our free game keeps score for you on one phone, with no app, no email, and no sign-up.

  1. Pick your categories. Choose any mix of the six below.
  2. Pick a length. 5, 10, or 15 questions per player.
  3. Add your players. Up to 8, each with their own color.
  4. A passenger reads the question out loud. The game shows whose turn it is.
  5. The player answers. Tap their pick. Right answers turn green, and the game adds the point.
  6. Read the fun fact. Then tap Next for the next player’s turn.
  7. Most points wins. The winner screen shows everyone’s score, and you can share it.

Don’t like a question? Tap Skip and get a new one, with no points lost. Your game saves on the phone, so you can stop at a rest area and pick it right back up.

What Kinds of Road Trip Trivia Questions Are There?

Our road trip trivia game has 222 questions in six categories. Pick the ones your car will love.

  • State Capitals (50): every state, with sneaky wrong answers from the same state. Is it Lansing or Detroit?
  • State Nicknames (50): which state is the Sunshine State? The Show-Me State?
  • Famous Landmarks (27): which state is home to Mount Rushmore, Graceland, or the Gateway Arch?
  • Roadside Wonders (56): weird and wonderful stops, like Carhenge, Lucy the Elephant, and a restaurant where you watch bears out the window
  • Road Trip Numbers (24): miles, lanes, and states. How wide is Tennessee? How many lanes is the widest freeway?
  • Movies & Music (15): the Home Alone house, the Rocky steps, and which band sang about being stuck in Lodi

Every question is about the US, so it all connects to places you could actually drive to.

Is Road Trip Trivia Good for Adults and Kids?

Yes, road trip trivia works for the whole car because you pick the categories. Mix easy and hard ones, and everybody has a shot.

For adults

  • Pick Road Trip Numbers and Movies & Music. They’re the trickiest categories
  • The driver can play too. A passenger reads the question out loud, and the driver just answers
  • Put something on the line. Loser buys gas station snacks, winner picks the music

For kids

  • Start with State Capitals and State Nicknames. It’s sneaky school practice that feels like a game
  • Play 5-question rounds. Short games keep little ones in it
  • Use the fun facts. Read them out loud, then watch for those places on your drive

Tips for the whole car

  • Play on boring stretches. Trivia is perfect for long highways with nothing to look at
  • Mix in other games. When eyes need to be out the window again, switch to bingo or the license plate game
  • Let the fun facts start a detour. Plenty of these places are real road trip stops you can actually visit
